Hari Raya Puasa merupakan perayaan yang dirayakan diseluruh dunia bagi menandakan berakhirnya bulan puasa Ramadan di mana umat Islam akan berpuasa dan beribadat dengan lebih tekun. Hari Raya Puasa bermula apabila anak bulan kelihatan, menandakan bermulanya bulan Syawal, iaitu bulan ke sepuluh dalam kalender Hijrah Islam. Anak bulan akan diperhatikan oleh pegawai bertugas pada sebelah petang hingga waktu maghrib di beberapa tempat strategik di Malaysia.

Perayaan Hari Raya Puasa juga merupakan berakhirnya tempoh untuk membayar zakat fitrah iaitu zakat yang dikenakan kepada mereka yang masih hidup sehingga masa itu. Zakat fitrah tidak perlu dibayar bagi mereka yang telah meninggal. Kebiasaannya orang Islam juga akan mula membayar zakat fitrah semenjak bulan puasa dan zakat fitrah ini akan berhenti dikutip apabila sembahyang sunat Aidil Fitri dimulakan.

Perayaan Hari Raya Puasa bermula sebaik sahaja anak bulan disahkan kelihatan oleh pemegang Mohor Besar Diraja, dimana takbir akan bergema di masjid-masjid menandakan mulanya perayaan Hari Raya Puasa. Pada keesokkan harinya, pada awal sebelah pagi, sesetengah orang akan pergi membersihkan perkuburan orang yang disayangi dan berdoa agar roh mereka dirahmati Allah.

Pada hari raya, orang Islam disunatkan mengenakan pakaian yang paling cantik, paling bersih, dan juga mengenakan wangi-wangian. Sembahyang sunat Hari Raya Puasa sebanyak 2 rakaat pula akan diadakan pada sebelah pagi, biasanya agak lewat sedikit berbanding Hari Raya Korban. Kita disunatkan untuk makan sedikit sebelum menunaikan sembahyang sunat Aidil Fitri. Selain itu kita disunatkan juga untuk pergi dan balik daripada mengerjakan sembahyang sunat Aidil Fitri melalui jalan yang berlainan.

Selepas sembahyang, sekali lagi umat Islam akan berbondong-bondong melawati perkuburan orang yang disayangi. Semua orang akan memakai pakaian baru dan selepas itu, mereka yang muda akan memohon kemaafan daripada mereka yang tua. Selepas itu semua orang akan menjamah pelbagai juadah yang disediakan sebelum ziarah dan menziarahi antara sesama mereka.

Pada hari raya, Aidil Fitri, kita disuruh agar membantu mereka yang dari golongan fakir miskin. Mereka yang malang ini jangan dilupakan dan hendaklan diraikan dan diberi bantuan sekadar yang mampu.

Pada zaman nabi, perayaan Hari raya Aidil Fitri hanya disambut selama 1 hari sahaja, berbanding dengan perayaan hari raya Aidil Adha yang disambut selama tiga hari.

Selepas meraikan hari raya Aidil fitri, orang Islam juga disunatkan untuk berpuasa enam hari atau 'puasa enam'. Puasa enam boleh dilakukan secara berturut-turut atau berselang-seli tetapi mesti dihabiskan di dalam bulan Syawal. Ini berdasarkan sabda Nabi S.A.W.

FC Barcelona stole a remarkable UEFA Champions League semi-final win through Andrés Iniesta's goal three minutes into added time to earn a showdown with Manchester United FC in Rome on 27 May.

Chelsea FC thought they had done enough to earn a repeat of last season's final as they defended Michael Essien's breathtaking ninth-minute strike with great resilience only for Essien to then err in failing to clear his lines in the dying moments. Lionel Messi squared to Iniesta and he cut his shot skilfully away from Petr Čech to give the 2006 champions – playing with ten men after Eric Abidal's second-half dismissal – victory on away goals and the chance to reclaim their crown, although they will have to do it without the suspended Abidal and Daniel Alves.

Template
The visitors set a template for the entire contest by dominating possession in the early stages with Xavi Hernández prompting away, yet their confidence soon took a dent as Essien conjured a goal totally befitting this illustrious company. The move developed down Chelsea's left with Ashley Cole prominent and Frank Lampard finding a threatening position just outside the penalty area. The midfielder saw his attempted cross brush off Yaya Touré and as the ball ballooned up Essien was alive to the possibilities, taking two steps forward before unleashing a lacerating volley with his left foot that shook the underside of the bar before coming down over the line.

Living dangerously
It was a stunning blow and Chelsea looked to kill the tie off before the Spanish league leaders could recover, with Lampard shooting over and Didier Drogba just beaten to a through ball by the onrushing Víctor Valdés. When Florent Malouda was checked illegally on the edge of the Barcelona box, Drogba went for goal from the free-kick and was frustrated to see his effort fly to safety off the goalkeeper's knee. John Terry headed just wide from the ensuing corner and two minutes later Barcelona were living dangerously again as Drogba, charging on to Lampard's lofted pass, tumbled under Abidal's challenge but referee Tom Henning Øvrebø was unmoved.

Missed opportunities
Would Chelsea come to regret those missed chances? Another followed at the start of the second half as Nicolas Anelka played in Drogba with Barça badly exposed. The Ivorian checked back inside but his attempt to find the net was foiled by the foot of Valdés and Malouda blazed the follow-up into the side-netting. In the main it was the away team who were asking the questions now, with Iniesta becoming more of an influence down the left and Alves, his first-half yellow card having ruled him out of the final, looking to raid down the opposite flank at every opportunity. Messi was not quite firing at his best in the face of constant attention from three or four defenders.

Red card
Drogba was always in the thick of things when Chelsea responded at the other end. He had another shout for a penalty denied and with the Camp Nou side throwing more men forward they were increasingly vulnerable to the counter – when Anelka went to the ground just outside the area it led to Abidal's red card. The Frenchman's dismissal increased the scale of Barcelona's task but they kept pegging away, survived a number of scares at the back, and then took their late, golden chance – Iniesta's 93rd-minute strike their first shot on target of the entire match. It was a crushing blow for Chelsea who were left to reflect on a fourth semi-final defeat in six seasons.

Vettel leads Red Bull to maiden one-two victory in China

Sebastian Vettel started from pole position at Monza last year, and won. He started from pole position in China on Sunday afternoon, and this time he led team mate Mark Webber home in a superb one-two that gave team owner Dietrich Mateschitz his first success under the Red Bull Racing name.

€n wet and windy conditions, it was thus German driver Bernd Maylander in his Mercedes-Benz safety car who led the field for the first eight laps. He had already done more laps this season that Heikki Kovalainen!

When Maylander pulled in after those eight laps, the Red Bulls led until their first refuelling stops, Webber on Lap 14, Vettel on 15. That put series leader Jenson Button into the lead after he’d passed Brawn team mate Rubens Barrichello on the 11th lap. Behind them, there was some great racing as McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari’s Felipe Massa were on the move.

The world champion climbed to fifth but then spun down to 10th on the Lap 11 and had to work his way back up to eighth by the time the safety car was deployed for the second time on Lap 18 when Robert Kubica slammed his BMW Sauber into the back of Jarno Trulli’s Toyota. While Maylander was heading the field again, Sebastien Buemi's Toro Rosso ran into the back of Vettel, unsighted in the spray, but would get away with it.

The advantage now went back to Vettel, but a slick refuelling stop by Brawn got Button back out in second place ahead of Massa, whose Ferrari rolled to a silent halt on the 21st lap. The race resumed on Lap 23, and with a lighter fuel load Vettel sprinted away from Button and Webber.

“Vettel is only quicker by fuel effect,” the Brawn team told Button, “and Webber is also shorter.” But the Australian moved ahead as Button missed his braking for Turn 14 on the 29th lap. Now it was a Red Bull one-two, but Button snatched second back two laps later when Webber ran wide in the final corner on a track slippier than a skating rink. Not to be outdone, however, Webber snatched the place back within a lap with a terrific counter-attack.

When Button found himself only 1.2s ahead of Vettel on the 40th lap, the German having made his final fuel stop but the Briton still with one to come, the writing was on the wall. A lap later Vettel drew alongside the Brawn going into Turn 14, and took back the lead with a calm reassurance reminiscent of fellow countryman Michael Schumacher in his heyday.

Button’s second stop on Lap 42 dropped him to third, and for the first time Brawn did not look like the pacesetter this season. That was Adrian Newey’s RB5 design, and Vettel and Webber had no trouble reeling off the final laps to a great triumph as Button rolled it off and settled for third ahead of Barrichello.

Both McLarens finished, Heikki Kovalainen heading Hamilton. The Finn made no mistakes, but Lewis had another spin and some off-course moments on his way to sixth. Behind him, Toyota’s Timo Glock fought his way back up to seventh for Toyota ahead of the again impressive Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Buemi, who withstood a lot of pressure in difficult conditions to take the final point.

Fernando Alonso was another spinner, bringing his Renault home only ninth ahead of Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, who fell back from fourth after his fuel stop on Lap 27 and was never thereafter in the hunt. He and Toro Rosso’s Sebastien Bourdais grabbed places from Nick Heidfeld in the closing stages, the German leading BMW Sauber team mate Robert Kubica home after the latter needed a second new nose late in the race.

Adrian Sutil had been on target for two points but crashed shortly after pushing Hamilton into a mistake, so it was Force €ndia team mate Giancarlo Fisichella who took 14th place ahead of Nico Rosberg, who had a terrible afternoon that included an unsuccessful gamble on intermediate tyres. Renault’s Nelson Piquet also had a gruesome time with spins requiring two new noses.

Besides Sutil, Williams’ Kazuki Nakajima failed to finish, probably giddy after several spins, Ferrari’s Felipe Massa dropped out of third place with an electronic problem on Lap 21, and Toyota’s Jarno Trulli was forced out after being attacked early on by Kubica.

Button thus extends his championship lead to 21 points, ahead of Barrichello on 15, Vettel on 10 and Webber on 9.5.

Brawn GP take dramatic one-two victory in Melbourne

Not since the French Grand Prix in 1954 has a team new to Formula One racing finished one-two on their debut. That day it was Juan Manuel Fangio and Karl Kling for Mercedes-Benz. This afternoon it was Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello for Brawn-Mercedes after an extraordinary ‘race of two halves’ in Australia.

Button led from pole as Barrichello bogged down when his car activated its anti-stall device, and the Brazilian was then embroiled in a first-corner clash with BMW Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld, Red Bull’s Mark Webber, Force €ndia's Adrian Sutil and McLaren’s Heikki Kovalainen.

Button streaked away from Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull, Robert Kubica’s BMW Sauber, Nico Rosberg’s Williams and the Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen. But the face of the race changed on Lap 19 when Kazuki Nakajima crashed his Williams heavily, bringing out the safety car until the end of the 24th lap.

By then Button had watched a 47.7s lead reduced to nothing, and began to struggle to generate heat in his tyres. But he got his head down and opened a gap to Vettel again. As the Ferraris faded, Kubica found his BMW Sauber getting better and better on the harder Bridgestone tyre and gradually began to put Vettel, on the softer option tyre, under serious pressure in the closing stages.

Going into Turn Three on the 55th lap - with three left to run under a setting sun which made driving conditions very difficult - Kubica got alongside Vettel but they touched. Both spun, but continued. But not for long. Vettel had lost his front wing and crashed heavily just as Kubica, further down the road, did the same thing. Out came the safety car again.

€ncredibly, that melee had promoted Barrichello back to the second place, despite his first-lap incident and a later touch with Raikkonen which damaged his Brawn’s front wing. €t was changed during his first pit stop on the 18th lap. As the race finished under the safety car, he admitted that he had never expected a one-two after all his dramas.

Jarno Trulli started from the pit lane after Toyota’s rear wing infringement yesterday, but hauled through to take the final podium finish, while a very determined drive brought a hugely valuable fourth place for McLaren's Lewis Hamilton. The world champion was briefly third in the dying stages after Trulli ran off track behind the safety car, before the €talian subsequently retook the place - a move which could yet prompt action from the stewards.

€n the second Toyota Timo Glock came home fifth. The German survived a spin while battling from his own pit lane start, when he and Fernando Alonso tangled.

The Spaniard brought his Renault home sixth, while seventh place came as a bitter disappointment to Rosberg. The German was running fourth with six laps to go and had set fastest lap, but had used up his Bridgestone option tyres and was simply in no position to defend the place. By the finish he had rookie Sebastien Buemi thirsting after him as Toro Rosso’s Swiss driver scored a point for eighth place on his debut.

Neither of the Ferraris finished. Both struggled with tyre wear, and as Massa suffered a mechanical problem late in the race, Raikkonen spun and subsequently retired.

Sebastien Bourdais was ninth in the second Toro Rosso, ahead of Adrian Sutil, who survived a brush with Force €ndia team mate Giancarlo Fisichella. They were separated by Heidfeld, who was consigned to a recovery race after the first corner fracas, while Fisichella further delayed himself by missing his pit marks in his first stop.

Webber, another in recovery mode, was the final classified finisher, ahead of Vettel, Kubica, and Raikkonen. The retirements were Massa, Nelson Piquet who spun his Renault after the first safety car restart, Nakajima and Kovalainen.

Button’s great victory marked the 200th for a British driver.

"€t's not just for me but for the whole team,” he said, “a fairy tale ending really to the first race of our career together and € hope we can continue this way. We are going to fight every way we can to keep this car competitive and at the front. This has got to continue and this is where we want to be. Bring on Malaysia!”

Police say missing maths prodigy Sufiah Yusof has been discovered safe and well.

But the 15-year-old Oxford University student has asked officers not to tell her family where she is.

A Thames Valley Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that Sufiah has been found safe and well and police are talking to her.

"At this early stage, Miss Yusof has indicated that she doesn't want anyone to know where she is and police will respect this wish.

"The family has been contacted and told their daughter is safe and well."

Sufiah was acclaimed a child genius when she took up a place at Oxford at 13.

She is in her third year of a four-year masters degree at the all-women's college St Hilda's and disappeared on 22 June after sitting her final exam.

E-mail to family

She e-mailed her family on Tuesday to say she was not coming home, but the message reportedly blames pressure at home for her failure to return.

"Maybe the public will have a different view of you as devoted parents. I'm not Cry-baby Soo-Fi anymore," the message reportedly adds.

Sufiah has also reportedly threatened to go to the press with her side of the story.

Her mathematician father Farooq, 43, has said since she disappeared that he thought his daughter was being held against her will.

But Thames Valley Police said they managed to locate the teenager - at an undisclosed location - by following up leads.

Superintendent Dave McWhirter said: "I'm delighted that my officers have brought this matter to a successful conclusion and have talked to Miss Yusof.

"A lot of excellent work has been put in over the last few days and it is through this that she has been found safe and well."

Passed exams

Speaking after the discovery that her daughter was safe, Sufiah's mother Halimahton, 41, said: "At least we know she is alive. We just want time together to talk about things now."

It had been thought that exam worry had caused Sufiah's disappearance, but on Tuesday Oxford University revealed that she had passed all her end-of-year exams.

Sufiah's family are devout Muslims who begin each day with prayers, followed by exercise to focus the mind and body.

Her elder brother Isaac was at one point the number four tennis player in the UK for his age, while her sisters Aisha, 17, and Iskander, 14, are in their second year at the University of Warwick.

Her youngest sister Zuleila, aged six, is preparing to sit her A-level maths exams.

All five children have been taught at home by their Malaysian-born parents.

KUALA LUMPUR: Tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan has topped up the reward for information on the whereabouts of missing girl Sharlinie Mohd Nasir, bringing it to the RM100,000 mark.

The businessman said he wanted to donate RM83,000 to increase the RM17,000 reward offer.

“I hope my gesture would help to find the girl. I join other Malaysians in praying for the safety of Sharlinie,” he told The Star here Sunday.

On Saturday, RM17,000 was put up by a group of people including MCA vice-president Datuk Donald Lim (RM5,000) and MCA Public Services and Complaints Department’s company GMH Property Sdn Bhd (RM5,000).

Lim, who is the Petaling Jaya Selatan MP, announced the amount at a press conference at the PJ police headquarters.

Tan said he hoped that all Malaysians would cooperate to find the missing girl.

Come 2007, Malaysia will celebrate 50 years of independence. The month of August will be filled with a myriad of parades, cultural performances, street shows and carnivals to commemorate the country's Independence or Merdeka Day on 31st August.

It was on 31st August 1957 when history was made as the Union Jack was lowered and the Malaysian flag hoisted, with the first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj leading the people in the famous shouts of Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka! (Independence!)

For more than 30 years, Merdeka Day celebrations have been marked by parades involving uniformed personnel, corporate players, school children, cultural dancers, athletes and Malaysians from all walks of life. After independence in 1957, Kuala Lumpur was the capital of the Federation of Malaya and continued to be the capital of the renamed Federation of Malaysia in 1963. For the occasion of independence, A large stadium, Stadium Merdeka (Independence Stadium), was built, where Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, declared Malaya's independence in front of a massive crowd.

The Union Jack was lowered from the flagpole at the Padang (now known as Dataran Merdeka; Independence Square) and the Malayan flag was raised. The Padang symbolized British sovereignty as it was a cricket ground for the colonial administrators and fronted the Royal Selangor Club, Malaya's most exclusive Whites-Only club.

In 1974 Kuala Lumpur seceded from Selangor and the city became a Federal Territory (Wilayah Persekutuan).

1st PRIME MINISTER
The Late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Alhaj
31 August 1957 - 21 September 1970

Tunku Abdul Rahman has always been a revered Malaysian leader who had made immense contributions to the country. For his sacrifices in bringing Malaysia from colonialism to Independence, it is self-explanatory why Tunku Abdul Rahman is known as the Father of Independence. He became the first prime minister of the Federation of Malaya from 1957 to1963, and of Malaysia from 1963 to 1970.

Tunku was born on February 8, 1903 in Alor Setar, the capital of the State of Kedah. He is the seventh prince of Sultan Abdul Hamid Shah, the 24th Sultan of Kedah, and Che Manjalara.

Tunku received his early education at the Debsurin School, Bangkok and Penang Free School. On a Kedah Government scholarship, he went on to study at St. Catherine's College, Cambridge University, where he received his Bachelor of Arts in law and history in 1925.

His leadership skills also unveiled in England. Realising the Malay students there were not represented by any organisation, he established the Kesatuan Melayu Great Britain (Malay Association of Great Britain) and became its first secretary.

After returning home, he joined the Kedah Civil Service as a cadet in the Legal Advisor's Office, and then as a district officer in several Kedah districts. During his early working days, he was rather unpopular among some British officials due to his frankness and tendency to introduce reforms in his quest to improve the living standards of the locals.

In 1938, due the outbreak of the Second World War, his attempt at completing his law studies at the Inner Temple in England came to a halt. He resumed his studies eight years later and came home with his legal qualifications in 1949.

Soon after his return, he was made chairman of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). On August 26, 1951, Tunku became the UMNO President succeeding Dato' Onn Jaafar. He travelled all over the country meeting people from all walks of life to promote unity. His efforts in overcoming the country's political problems by way of cooperation among the various ethnic groups saw the birth of the Alliance Party in 1955.

Under his leadership, the Alliance won the country's first general election in July 1955. Tunku was then appointed the country's Chief Minister and Minister of Home Affairs. In 1956, he led a mission to London for a discussion with the British government concerning the Independence for Malaya. The meeting resulted in the signing of the Independence Treaty at Lancaster House in London on February 8, 1956 and consequently, the Independence of Malaya in August 31, 1957. Tunku was then elected as the first Prime Minister of Malaya, and led the Alliance to victory in the 1959, 1964 and 1969 general elections. On Sept 22, 1970, Tunku stepped down as the Prime Minister and was succeeded by Tun Abdul Razak.

During his lifetime, Tunku was blessed with seven children from his marriage to the late Sharifah Rodziah Syed Alwi Barakbah. Tunku passed away in 1990.

2nd PRIME MINISTER
The Late Tun Abdul Razak Bin Dato' Hussein
22 September 1970 - 13 January 1976

>From 1970 to 1976, Tun Abdul Razak became the second Prime Minister of Malaysia as the successor to Tunku Abdul Rahman. Born in Pulau Keladi, Pahang on March 11, 1922, Tun Razak is the only child to Dato' Hussein bin Mohd Taib and Hajah Teh Fatimah bt Daud.

Tun Razak received his early education at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar in 1934. After joining the Malay Administrative Service in 1939, he was awarded a scholarship to study at Raffles College in Singapore in 1940. His studies at the college ceased at the advent of the Second World War.

Tun Razak left for Britain in 1947 to study law upon receiving a Malayan Union scholarship. In 1950, he received a Degree of an Utter Barrister from Lincoln's Inn. During his student days in England, Tun Razak was a member of the British Labour Party and a prominent student leader of the Kesatuan Melayu Great Britain (Malay Association of Great Britain). He also formed the Malayan Forum, an organisation for Malayan students to discuss political issues pertaining to their native land.

Upon his return, Tun Razak joined the Malayan Civil Service. Owing to his political calibre, in 1950 he became the youth chief for United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). Two years later, he worked as the Assistant State Secretary of Pahang and in February 1955 at the age of 33, he became Pahang's Chief Minister. He conteseted in the country's first general elections in July 1955 and won. Soon after, he was appointed as the Education Minister. Tun Razak was also a member of the February 1956 mission to London to seek the Independence of Malaya from the British.

After the general elections in 1959, he became the Minister of Rural Development. Simultaneously, he also held the portfolios of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense. His achievements include formulating the development policy known as the Red Book. In September 1970, Tun Razak succeeded Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra as the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

In 1971, Tun Razak initiated the initiation the New Economic Policy (NEP). He and the "second generation" of Malay politicians identified the need to deal vigorously with the economic and social disparities which fuelled racial antagonism in 1969. The NEP affirmed two basics goals - to reduce and eventually eradicate poverty, and to reduce and eventually eradicate identification of economic function with race.

For his contributions in the area of national and rural development, Tun Abdul Razak is dearly known as the Father of Development.

3rd PRIME MINISTER
The Late Tun Hussein Bin Dato' Onn
14 January 1976 - 15 July 1981

Tun Hussein Onn was Malaysia's third prime minister, leading the country from 1976 to 1981. He was born in Johor Bahru, Johor on February 12, 1922 to Dato Onn Jaafar and Datin Halimah Hussein.

He received his early education in Singapore and at the English College in Johor Bahru. After leaving school, he joined the Johor Military Forces as a cadet in 1940 and was sent a year later to the Indian Military Academy in Dehra Dun, India. Upon completion of his training, he was absorbed into the Indian Army and served in the Middle East when the Second World War broke. After the war, his vast experience prompted the British to employ him as an instructor at the Malayan Police Recruiting and Training Centre in Rawalpindi.

Tun Hussein returned to Malaysia in 1945 and was appointed Commandant of the Johor Bahru Police Depot. The following year he joined the Malaya Civil Service as an assistant administrative officer in Segamat, Johor and subsequently served in Klang and Kuala Selangor as a district officer.

Came from a family with deep nationalistic spirit and political roots, Tun Hussein resigned from the civil service to join politics where he experienced a meteoric rise in his career. In 1949, he became the first youth chief of UMNO (United Malays National Organisation), a party his father helped established. In 1950, he was elected the UMNO secretary general. Tun Hussein however left UMNO in 1951 to join his father in forming the Independence of Malaya Party (IMP).

When support for IMP seemed unfavourable, Tun Hussein went to London to study law at Lincoln's Inn, qualifying as a Barrister-at-Law. He came back as a certified lawyer and practised in Kuala Lumpur.

Tun Hussein returned to politics in 1968 after being persuaded by Prime Minister Tun Abdul Razak to rejoin UMNO. He stood in and won the general elections in 1969 and was then appointed as the education minister. On August 13, 1973, he succeeded the late Tun Dr Ismail as the Deputy Prime Minister. On January 15, 1976, he was officially appointed as the prime minister of Malaysia.

Tun Hussein was married to Toh Puan Suhaila Tan Sri Haji Mohd Noah. Due to helath reasons, Tun Hussein retired from active politics and relinquished his prime minister post in 1981. He passed away on May 29, 1990. He was 68 then and will always be remembered as the Father of Unity for his efforts in promoting goodwill among the various communities.

4th PRIME MINISTER MALAYSIA
Tun Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamad
16 July 1981- 31 October 2003

Tun Dr Mahathir was born on December 20, 1925 in Seberang Perak, Alor Setar, the state capital of Kedah. He was educated in Alor Setar at the Sultan Abdul Hamid College, and in 1947 entered the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore where he studied medicine. After graduating in 1953 he he served as a Medical Officer before setting up a private practice in his hometown.

Since 1945, he has been active in politics. He has been a member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) since its inception in 1946. He was first elected as a Member of Parliament from 1964 to 1969 to represent Kota Setar Selatan. In 1969, however, Mahathir was expelled from the UMNO after his forceful advocacy of ethnic Malay nationalism brought him into conflict with Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman. Nevertheless. the New Economic Policy that the government adopted in 1971 to improve the economic situation of Malays embodied many of the ideas Mahathir had advocated.

Owing to his keen interest in the country's education, he was appointed Chairman of the first Higher Education Council in 1968, Member of the Higher Education Advisory Council in 1972, Member of the University Court and University of Malaya Council, and Chairman of the National University Council in 1974.

After Tun Abdul Razak became prime minister in 1970, Tun Dr Mahathir rejoined UMNO and was re-elected to its Supreme Council in 1972. In 1973, Dr. Mahathir was appointed a Senator, a post he relinquished in order to contest in the 1974 General Elections. He was re-elected to Parliament unopposed in 1974 and was then appointed Minister of Education. When Tun Hussein Onn became prime minister in 1976, he made Tun Dr Mahathir his Deputy Prime Minister in addition to being Minister of Education. In a Cabinet reshuffle two years later, he relinquished the Education portfolio for that of Trade and Industry. As Minister of Trade and Industry, he led several investment promotion missions overseas.

Tun Dr Mahathir was elected as one of the three Vice Presidents of UMNO in 1975. In 1978, he won the Deputy President seat. In June 1981, Tun Dr Mahathir was elected president of the UMNO, which ensured his succession as the Fourth Prime Minister of Malaysia on July 16 1981. Under his leadership, the ruling National Front coalition, led by the UMNO, won landslide victories in the 1982, 1986, 1990, and 1995 general elections. As prime minister,Tun Dr Mahathir has been active in international affairs, especially in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.

His leadership gave Malaysia the political stability it needed to pursue policies that would foster sustained economic growth. The government welcomed foreign investment, reformed the tax structure, reduced trade tariffs, and privatised numerous state-owned enterprises. Tun Dr Mahathir sought to bridge Malaysia's remaining ethnic divisions by increasing general prosperity. In this regard, the New Economic Policy, which had encouraged Malay economic success, was replaced in Tun Dr Mahathir's leadership, Malaysia acquired one of the most prosperous and dynamic economies in Southeast Asia, with a burgeoning manufacturing sector, an expanding middle class, rising literacy rates, and increased life expectancies.

On January 8 1999, he relinquished the Home Affairs Minister's post. Due to the resignation of Tun Daim Zainuddin as the Finance Minister and Special Functions Minister on June 1 2001, Tun Dr Mahathir was acting ministers for both positions. Currently, he is holding the post of Finance Minister. In fact, he has expressed to the nation that he plans to resign in 2003.

Tun Dr Mahathir is married to a doctor, Datin Seri Dr. Siti Hasmah bt Mohd Ali, and they have seven children Marina, Mirzan, Melinda, Mokhzani, Mukhriz, Maizura, and Mazhar and ten grandchildren.

5th PRIME MINISTER MALAYSIA
Y.A.B. Dato' Seri Abdullah bin Haji Ahmad Badawi
31 October 2003 - present

Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi became the 5th Prime Minister of Malaysia on 31st October 2003..

Born on 26 November 1939 in Kampung Perlis, Bayan Lepas, Pulau Pinang, Dato' Seri Abdullah received his early education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pematang Bertam. He later attended Bukit Mertajam High School, Penang Methodist Boys' School and a religious school started by his family. Dato' Seri Abdullah pursued his tertiary education at the University of Malaya where he graduated with B.A.(Hons) in Islamic studies in 1964.

Upon graduating, Dato' Seri Abdullah joined the civil service, where he started his career as Assistant Secretary in the Public Services Department in 1964. In 1969, Dato' Seri Abdullah moved to the National Operation Council (NOC) or Majlis Gerakan Negara (MAGERAN), a body responsible to exercise the ruling powers for the country after the May 1969 racial riots. Dato' Seri Abdullah was later promoted to the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sports as Director General (1971-1973) and Deputy Secretary General in 1974.

Dato' Seri Abdullah resigned from Government service in 1978 to pursue a political career. A loyal UMNO member since 1965, he was elected UMNO Supreme Council Member in 1981, and UMNO Vice President in 1984 and UMNO Deputy President in 1999.

Dato' Seri Abdullah won his first election for the Parliamentary seat of the Kepala Batas constituency in 1978, (a seat he has retained since). In the same year, Dato' Seri Abdullah was appointed to his first post in the administration of the Government of Malaysia, as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Federal Territory Ministry. He was then promoted to Deputy Minister in the same Ministry in 1980. Dato' Seri Abdullah later held the post of Minister in the Prime Minister's Department from 1981 to 1984; and Minister of Education from 1984 to 1986; Minister of Defence from 1986 to 1987; and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1991 to January 1999. In January 1999, Dato' Seri Abdullah was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Home Affairs.

Dato' Seri Abdullah is married to Datin Seri Endon Bt. Dato' Mahmood since 1965. The couple is blessed with two children, a son, Kamaluddin (married to Azrene) and a daughter, Nori (married to Khairy Jamaluddin).

Sexually suggestive TV ads get parents steamed up

HEARING her eight-year-old daughter’s declaration that “I will never eat cakes because boys don’t like fat girls,” Shang Xiuyun turned to see a TV ad for underwear featuring a half-naked slim girl flirting with a man.

“I think our country should set up a rating system for sexually suggestive TV ads,” says Shang, who is also a deputy of the Beijing Municipal People’s Congress, the local legislature.

After monitoring commercials for three months, Shang and fellow legislator Tang Xilan are to advise the government to set ratings and watershed times for ads deemed improper for minors.

Shang called on the government to make strict regulations to eradicate sexually suggestive commercials, at least during the summer and winter holiday periods.

The present law on advertising implemented 12 years ago vaguely prohibits “content that is obscene, superstitious, terrifying, violent and evil; content that is discriminative against nationalities, races, religions and sex.” But it has no details on how such advertising should be judged.

“Specific items should be added to the law to prohibit sexually suggestive TV ads,” says Shang.

More than one million Beijing middle and primary schoolchildren started their summer holidays last week, and many spent a lot of time watching television, a pastime many parents are beginning to question.

Scantily clad young women, protruding breasts and flirtatious behaviour mark out commercials for lingerie, breast enhancement and cosmetic products, most of which are bundled into prime time programming.

“Most of them misinform children about sex,” says Shang.

Shang recalls her own daughter’s comment after a cosmetic ad that depicted a young couple behaving frostily to each other before the woman used a brand-name skin care product that cleared her facial freckles: “Mom, daddy will dislike you because you have freckles on your face.” – China Daily / Asia News Network

Chinese authorities have an open policy on the production, retailing and possession of sex toys which they consider important to enhance the sexual life of couples.

Most of the sex toys, accessories and products sold in such outlets are manufactured in places like Guangzhou, Shenyang, Wenzhou, Beijing and Hangzhou.

Adult products store: This adult shop in East Nanjing Road near the Bund in Shanghai is popular among visitors. Customers can buy sex toys off the shelves at adult health and sex shops.

Many foreign companies have set up manufacturing plants in China to make condoms and sex products at more competitive costs.

A recent visit to an adult shop in busy East Nanjing Road near the Bund showed that many products ranging from dildos, artificial private parts and dolls to Viagra came with product tags stating that they were made in China. Some of them were from countries like Spain and the United States.

To the Chinese, sex products are no longer considered as novelty goods. They are so common that everyone aged 18 and above can buy them in many outlets in the metropolis.

However, they cannot be advertised in public, except for condoms “depending on occasions” as part of the Shanghai municipal government’s effort to promote its safe sex campaign.

The Chinese authorities have an open policy on the production and retailing of these products as they feel that these are important to enhance the sexual life of couples and hence take a step further towards a caring society.

While adult products are tolerated, pornographic videos and publications are still banned in China.

Sweden-based Lelo is among the foreign companies that have invested in either the production, trading or marketing of their sex products in China.

The company, which makes vibrators and other “sensual pleasure objects with contemporary flair,” moved its plant to Suzhou in Jiangsu province two years ago to manufacture and export them to clients all over the world.

“Our products are not mobile phones, jewellery or clothes you buy to show your status. They are made for people who want to do something great and special for themselves and appreciate the beautiful design and quality,” Lelo CEO Filip Sedic said in an interview.

The Lelo vibrators are only available now in the Chinese market even though they have been sold to people from 43 countries in the last four years.

“China is a very special market as there are no high-end shops where our products can be sold. It reminds me of our beginning when we started to sell our products (elsewhere) four years ago.

“We are looking for some high-end shops and I think more such shops will open in China,” he said.

Lelo has no problem dealing with the Chinese authorities that have been “very helpful” and the company “feels very comfortable” with the collaboration, he added.

The products are designed in Sweden and made in Suzhou, but Sedic added, that there is no compromise in the quality of the end product.

“We are doing this the Swedish way, everything by the book. We are extremely careful and have the luxury of doing everything properly,” he said.

Now that the company has registered its trademark, its intellectual property concerns are well taken care of. Sedic said it was time for them to penetrate the Chinese market.

China has the potential to be one of the biggest buyers of sex products in the world, along with the US and Japan.

According to statistics released by the authorities, the total sales of adult and reproductive products recorded in China have reached 50bil yuan (RM22.7bil).

The country is home to some of the major industry players, with the setting-up of more than 1,000 companies in the adult product-related business.

China has the largest adult toy OEM producers in the world and its total production accounts for 80% of the world’s output.

The annual adult and health fairs and conferences in Guangzhou, Wuhan, Fujian, Beijing and Shanghai attracted thousands of visitors and exhibitors looking to break into the market and form joint ventures with local companies.

The upcoming Adult Care Expo 2007, featuring some of the major adult product makers and suppliers from all over the world, will be held from Aug 10 to 12 at INTEX Shanghai.

Buying adult toys is now just a click away. Shy consumers don’t even need to visit adult shops any more to buy the products as they can do it online.

Most Chinese and foreign manufacturers and retailers have their own websites on which their products are widely sold.

Some portals even provide viewers with the latest updates on the industry and the government’s policies.

Despite the fact that China is gaining momentum in the adult industry, producers, suppliers and retailers have their share of problems for flouting the regulations.

Oriental Morning Post reported that Food and Drug Administration officials from the Shanghai municipal government recently spot-checked several shabby outlets in Xuhui district where more than 30 items like fake condoms and potency pills were seized.

Other recent reports said that operators were now selling their sex products openly by placing them outside their outlets in Beijing and that drew complaints from the public.

Police have also arrested an owner of a website selling sex products for allegedly providing visitors the convenience of posting and downloading sex novels on the website.

Compared with other countries that have been in the business for more than 30 years, China is still a newcomer to the adult industry with only about 10 years of experience.

China Healthcare Association’s sexual medical and healthcare sub-council secretary-general Su Weiguo, who was one of the earliest Chinese entrepreneurs to see the potential of the adult industry and founded Huan Xi Tang – China’s largest retail chain – 13 years ago, said more needed to be done to regulate the industry to be on par with the international market.

Stepdad rapes girl after oral sex

JOHOR BARU: A nine-year-old girl was raped by her stepfather after she was forced to perform oral sex on him.

The incident took place at their home in Taman Kenanga here on July 7 at around 8pm, when the victim’s mother was at work.

Johor Baru (South) CID chief Dept Supt Norhashim Mohamed said that the suspect led the girl into a bedroom and fondled her private parts before forcing himself on her.

“The victim later confided to her friend and a teacher at a school before lodging a report at the Tampoi police station with the teacher,” he said.

The 31-year-old suspect was picked up from his home on Tuesday and has been held in remand until Monday.

Ted is desperate to find his life partner and How I Met Your Mother is his story.

Have you met Ted? Well, I have and he’s a little boring. “Have you met Ted?” is actually a line regularly uttered in the sitcom, How I Met Your Mother. It is a line “created” by a character, Barney, as a way to help his best friend, Ted, break the ice with a girl he likes.

This is essentially the crux of the sitcom’s storyline. Ted, a 27-year-old single guy, is desperate to find “The One” ever since his other best friend Marshall got engaged. Ted thinks that it is time for him to settle down, or at least start finding someone he can settle down with in the future.

While the plot is hardly exciting, what really makes the show interesting is the fact that each episode is told in reverse. Well, sort of.

The cast of How I Met Your Mother isn’t very impressive in the first season.
You see, the show is set in 2030. Ted is now 52 and happily married, with two teenage kids. One day, he sits his son and daughter down and starts telling them the story of how he met their mother.

The thing is, it’s a very, very long story. Rather than telling them about the day he met their mother, Ted starts to reminisce even further and talks about his life as a single guy living in the city back in 2005, which is where 98% of the stories take place.

Ted lives with law student Marshall, whose fiancée, Lily, recently moved in with them.

The three are friends with the over-confident but also single Barney, who is by far the funniest in the group. There’s also Robin, a new girl whom Ted initially thought was The One.

Together, the group hangs out in a bar, constantly talking about a girl Ted likes, or a girl Barney is two-timing, or even about Robin’s horrible, confidence-killing job.

They hardly talk about Marshall and Lily – they’re mainly just there to finish off someone’s sentence or be the butt of someone else’s joke.

Ted is a boring character, too. Sure, he’s a sweet guy and a little different from most other male characters in so many sitcoms, but he is not really likeable. And Marshall, Lily and Robin? B-O-R-I-N-G!

The only character who is mildly appealing is Barney, but that’s only because he is over the top and says funny catchphrases like “suit-up!” (which means to wear a suit, like how he always does).

He also came up with the “Lemon Law” concept for dating. The Lemon Law is normally associated with the act of buying a second-hand car – basically, a person only has 30 seconds to think about whether or not a car is worth getting before the salesman kicks up his sales pitch and suckers you into buying it, even when you know the car is a total “lemon”.

According to Barney, that same theory works in dating, too – in 30 seconds, you need to figure out if the person you’re on a date with is worth getting to know.

Of course, there are obvious flaws in many of Barney’s “theories” but you don’t really care because what matters more is that the character is interesting enough for you to keep watching the show.

Barney is played by Neil Patrick Harris, who is perhaps more known for his title role in sitcom Doogie Howser. Harris plays the part of a cocky ladies’ man down pat. What really makes him endearing, though, is his straight-laced, clean-cut look that doesn’t necessarily match his character.

Josh Radnor, a relatively unknown actor, plays the present Ted. Meanwhile, future Ted is voiced by Bob Saget (you can only hear him and see the back of his head).

Alyson Hannigan, a regular in silly films like Date Movie and the American Pie “trilogy”, plays Lily. Now, here is an actress who is no stranger to comedic roles, yet, as Lily, Hannigan is as bland as baby food, and a little annoying too.

Still, the show is going into its third season in the United States and is greatly favoured by millions of viewers there. Even critics are constantly raving about it.

So perhaps, this show has not really picked up its pace yet and I may need to give it a few more episodes to see if it improves over time. Besides, I am a little curious to find out how long it will take Ted to finally tell his kids exactly how he met their mother!

Tips for grown-up zits

One of the best things about being a grown-up is waving goodbye to those awkward years of adolescence. But there’s one thing we may not leave behind once we hit twenty one – acne.

Acne – blackheads, whiteheads and pimples – hits many grown-ups at some point in their lives, plaguing about 40% of women and 25% of men.

“Acne is triggered when the ducts connecting the sebaceous glands in the skin that dispenses oil to keep skin soft and healthy are abnormally overactive,” says Dr. Steven Chow, a consultant dermatologist.

“Excess of oil (sebum) and cells build up in the duct to clog pores with a firm, oil-soaked plug, creating an environment where bacteria and yeasts can thrive. The body’s immune system responds, inflaming the area.”

The first most important thing for an acne-prone skin is hygiene.
According to Dr Chow, there are many factors that can aggravate adult acne such as stress, inappropriate cosmetic items, medications and genetics, though it is widely accepted by most experts that hormones play a major role.

“Contrary to popular belief, acne is not caused by eating too many fast food hamburgers with French fries, consuming soft drinks, gorging on chocolate, thinking about sex or not washing your face.

“In adult acne, it is linked to hormonal imbalance, which is why grown men are less likely to suffer from it compared to women. In females, hormones go through peaks and troughs more frequently, brought on by changes in their cyclical physiology.

“The key to unlock how adult acne affects you is to understand the role of androgenic hormones, a class of masculine steroid hormones, and how it affects the skin.”

A male hormone, a woman’s dilemma

There are various androgenic hormones such as testosterone – developed in the testes in men and ovaries in women as well as the adrenal glands of both sexes – that prompt the production of the oily substance linked to acne.

“Flare-ups” can take place whenever the ratio of male-to-female hormones (androgens vs oestrogen) in the body changes, where there is an androgenic overdrive, ie more androgens than oestrogens.

This often ensues during adolescence, ovulation, menstruation, and childbirth, which also explains why acne is also common in women experiencing menopause.

During a menstrual cycle, the hormonal balanced is tipped off balance when the ovaries release the egg, causing the oestrogen levels to drop, or just before a menstrual flow, where progesterone, which has qualities of androgens, rises.

Progesterone is made in the adrenal glands and is essential for preparing as well as maintaining the uterine lining for a successful pregnancy, which leads to breakouts for many pregnant women during their first trimester.

Besides testosterone and progesterone, Dr Chow says that physical strain such as chronic severe sleep deprivation; binge dieting or gorging on junk food can activate stress related hormones that may also instigate acne.

“Stress exacerbates any disease and acne is no different.

“There is supporting evidence that indicates physical ‘tension’ can stimulate the production of corticotrophin, which sends the sebaceous glands that produce the sebum into a frenzy.”

This is in line with research published in 2002 and highlighted on CNN, which points to stress messing with hormones.

Stress stimulates the production of extra progesterone to help cope with the strain, where its androgen component can trigger acne.

“Men are not immune to stress and do experience ‘flare ups’.

“However, their bodies create high levels of testosterone throughout their lives, keeping their sebaceous glands at maximum stimulation,” commented Dr Chow.

This is why extra surges of hormone production in adult males have less affect on their acne when compared to women, Dr Chow explains.

“However, the good news is that adult acne is easily controllable via a healthy skin regime which can prevent it from becoming severe and disfiguring,” says Dr Chow.

Be gentle to your skin

The first most important thing for an acne-prone skin is hygiene.

It should include no harsh scrubbing or over-washing, because this can cause possible skin irritation or over-production of oil to replace what has been washed off, clogging pores in the process.

Products with gentle exfoliation ingredient should be used so as not to irritate the skin.

Also skip products containing alcohol where possible as these can take off the top layer of the skin and cause the glands to produce more oil, further causing blocking of pores.

“If you do spot acne-troubled areas, do not pick at them.

“This can aggravate the risk of skin infection and acne scars. In terms of make-up, use a light skin moisturiser and oil-free makeup,” advises Dr Chow.

“Should acne suddenly start breaking out after having clear skin for years and over-the-counter acne fighters don’t do the job, seek help from your family doctor or a dermatologist.”

This is because a dermatologist can help tease out the possible cause, and more importantly, find the treatment, or combination of treatments, that works best for your skin type.

The first line of defence

There are a range of treatment solutions for mild to moderate acne, ranging from antibiotics, physical treatments and even birth control medications that a dermatologist may recommend.

Most commonly used and usually form the first line of defence to tackle adult acne are retinoids, which are related chemically to vitamin A and are used in medicine to increase skin cell turnover.

Touted to be the most effective type of medications for unblocking the pores of oil glands, they are generally ideal for non-inflammatory acne – whiteheads and blackheads – before they transform into red angry pimples.

“Established topical retinoids such as adapalene gel form the latest arsenal of prescription acne fighters to help skin cells shed normally and squeeze out plugged material in the follicle, rather than allowing them to accumulate in pores,” says Dr Chow.

“Depending on the patient, the newer range of retinoids can be used in combination with antibiotics and have shown considerably less side effects such as dryness, irritation as well as redness which plagued the older generation of vitamin A creams.”

In more serious cases

Severe acne is characterised by deep cysts, inflammation, extensive damage to the skin and scarring, where systemic treatment by a dermatologist is a necessity.

“If not treated properly, acne can leave angry and ugly scars in its wake, which will mark a person for life.

“Here, patients can turn to acne surgery, oral isotretinoin and hormone-modulating agents like contraceptives,” Dr Chow recommends.

Acne surgery serves to drain and extract large cysts that do not respond to medication. It should be done by medical professionals so as not to cause infection and scarring.

Isotretinoin is a potent drug containing vitamin A derivative that has shown to be effective on cystic acne and is consumed orally.

“Clear skin is possible for even the most acne prone adult. All it takes is getting the right advice, manage your skin prudently and in time it will heal,” said Dr Chow.

PETALING JAYA: There is no hope for Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to make a political comeback and become Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said.

“I don’t think he has any hope of ever achieving whatever he wants to achieve. Of course, he wants to be a Prime Minister. He will never get that support,” he said in a 15-minute interview with Sharanjit Leyl on the Asia Today programme on BBC yesterday.

Dr Mahathir was asked about Anwar’s chances of making a political comeback in view of the upcoming general elections.

Asked why he was of the opinion that Anwar could not achieve his ambition, Dr Mahathir said it was because Anwar was losing his followers very fast and that they no longer trusted his sincerity.

“You can tell people something and people will believe you for a short time but later on, they are bound to discover whether you are telling the truth or you are lying to them,” he said.

On whether he thought that Malaysians valued his contributions to the nation, Dr Mahathir said many appreciated his contributions but did not openly show it.

Asked whether he was sorry over his past controversial and unpopular remarks about the Jews and other groups, Dr Mahathir said: “I feel that I have to say what I believe in. A lot of people may not like what I’ve said but it has to be said.”

To a question whether he thought that the West had become overly prejudiced against Muslims worldwide particularly after the Sept 11 terrorist attacks, he said: “Yes, I think so because they refuse to accept the truth regarding the causes of all these things (terror attacks). They are in a state of absolute denial.”

Dr Mahathir pointed out that the problem with the West was that they have oppressed the Muslims who lacked a huge military force to fight back.

“These people have resorted to what we call terror attacks,” he said.

Asked to comment on the terror alert in Britain after two explosives-laden cars were discovered in London, he said: “Well, there are going to be more of these things.

“You just can examine 1.3 billion Muslims but that is not going to help you stop them from acting that way because they feel aggrieved,” he said.

Truck bomber kills 23 Iraqi army recruits

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A suicide truck bomber killed 23 new Iraqi army recruits when he rammed into their vehicle south of Baghdad on Sunday, police said, a day after a huge truck bomb killed 150 people in the north of the country.

Police and army officials said the bomber drove into a truck carrying the Sunni Arab recruits to Baghdad just after they had joined the army in western Anbar province. They said 27 recruits were wounded in the attack near the town of Haswa.

Sunni Arab tribal leaders in Anbar have rounded up thousands of men to join local security forces to fight Sunni Islamist al Qaeda, partly in anger over the militant group's indiscriminate killing of civilians and harsh interpretation of Islam.

Two car bombs killed eight people in Baghdad, police added.

In the northern Shi'ite town of Tuz Khurmato, police and residents used heavy machines and shovels to search for more bodies under the rubble of nearly 100 shops and homes in the wake of Saturday's massive truck bomb blast.

Across the town, relatives mourned and buried their dead.

"I can't comprehend what has happened. My entire family was killed in one moment," said Abbas Kadhim, who told Reuters the blast levelled his house, killing his wife, his two sons aged 6 and 8, his parents and also a brother.

"There is no value left in my life ... I have asked God why I didn't just die with them so I wouldn't have to go through this torture."

The death toll of 150 made it the second deadliest insurgent bombing in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. In March, a truck bomb attack also blamed on al Qaeda killed 152 people in the northern town of Tal Afar.

The surge in bombings comes despite a major U.S. and Iraqi military offensive that has focused largely on Baghdad and the beltways around the capital, where U.S. commanders believe a lot of car bombs are put together.

The offensive has driven many militants out of Baghdad to areas where the troop presence is not as heavy.

U.S. officials blame most big car bombings on al Qaeda, which they say is trying to trigger civil war between Iraq's majority Shi'ites and minority Sunni Arabs.

TURNING AGAINST AL QAEDA

The suicide truck bomber struck the new Iraqi soldiers only hours after they had signed up in the town of Falluja, once a hotbed of the Sunni Arab insurgency.

Like other towns in Anbar, violence has dropped in Falluja since tribal elders last year turned against al Qaeda, which once had a tight grip on the mainly Sunni Arab province.

That has forced many al Qaeda militants out of Anbar, but others have fought back, sparking a bloody power struggle in the vast desert province.

Two police officers in the Shi'ite town of Tuz Khurmato confirmed 150 people had been killed in Saturday's explosion that Iraqi officials blamed on al Qaeda. The officers said 20 people were still missing and 250 were wounded.

Many of the victims were women and children who were shopping. The parked truck was packed with explosives but covered with hay so it would not arouse suspicion, officials said.

Police said heavy machinery had been brought in from larger towns to dig through the rubble of the market in Tuz Khurmato, 185 km north of Baghdad.

Security forces had cordoned off the area.

"I just visited the scene. It looks like an earthquake happened there," Shalal Abid al-Ahmed, a member of the Salahuddin provincial council, told Reuters.

One policeman added: "People from the whole town of Tuz Khurmato are helping, some have brought along small shovels."

Gina Lollobrigida was born in Subiaco, Italy. Gina, destined to be called "The Most Beautiful Woman in the World," possibly had St. Brigid as part of her surname. She was the daughter of a furniture manufacturer, and grew up in the pictorial mountain village. The young Gina did some modeling, and from there went on to participate successfully in several beauty contests. In 1947 she entered a beauty competition for Miss Italy, but came in third. The winner was Lucia Bosé (born 1931) who would go on to appear in over 50 movies, and the first runner-up was Gianna Maria Canale (born 1927), who would appear in almost 50 films. After appearing in a half-dozen films in Italy, it was rumored that in 1947 film tycoon Howard Hughes had her flown to Hollywood; however, this did not result in her staying America, and she returned to Italy (her Hollywood breakout movie wouldn't come until six years later in the John Huston film Beat the Devil (1953)). Back in Italy, in 1949, Gina married Milko Skofic, a Yugoslavian doctor, and they had one son (they would be married for 22 years, until they divorced in 1971). As her film roles and national popularity increased, Gina was tagged "The Most Beautiful Woman in the World", after her signature movie, _Donna più bella del mondo, La (1955)_ . Gina was nicknamed la "Lollo," as she embodied the prototype of Italian beauty. Her earthy looks and short "tossed salad" hairdo were especially influential, and in fact there's a type of curly lettuce named "lollo" in honor of her cute hairdo. Her film Come September (1961) co-starring Rock Hudson won the Golden Globe as the World's Film Favorite. In the 1970s Gina was seen in only a few films, as she took a break from acting and concentrated on another career: photography. Among her subjects were Paul Newman, Salvador Dalí and the German national soccer team. A skilled photographer, Gina had a collection of her work, "Italia Mia, " published in 1973. Immersed in her other passions (sculpting and photography), it would be 1984 before Gina would grace American TV on "Falcon Crest" (1981). Although Gina was always active, she only appeared in a few films in the 1990s. In June, 1999, she turned to politics and ran, unsuccessfully, for one of Italy's 87 European Parliament seats, from her hometown of Subiaco. Gina was also a corporate executive for fashion and cosmetics companies. As she told "Parade" magazine in April, 2000: "I studied painting and sculpting at school and became an actress by mistake." ABDUL Razak Baginda's secretary does not believe the political analyst had abetted in the murder of Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Siti Aisyah Mohd Azlan, 24, told the court that she had never known her employer of three years to be a violent man.

“He is a good employer, who is also humorous,” she said when Abdul Razak’s counsel Wong Kian Kheong asked her to describe her boss during cross-examination.

Siti Aisyah, the ninth prosecution witness in the murder trial, said she did not believe that Abdul Razak, who she fondly referred to as “Encik Razak”, could have abetted in Altantuya’s murder.

Earlier, the secretary said she had overheard what the analyst said to Altantuya when she met him just outside his office in August last year.

Siti Aisyah said Abdul Razak had just come out of his room in the office, when he bumped into Altantuya.

She said the analyst told the Mongolian woman: “I’ve got nothing to do with you. If you want to do anything, go ahead.”

Siti Aisyah said she and her two colleagues had also been told by Abdul Razak that Altantuya had blackmailed him for money before and that they were not to let her into the office if she showed up.

Mohamad Zaini: ‘I don’t know who recorded the entry’

The secretary testified with the use of a microphone set up in court yesterday. She had spoken very softly on Tuesday.

Later, the prosecution tendered to court the visitors' logbook for the Lembaga Getah Asli Malaysia building, where Abdul Razak’s office is located.

The logbook was tendered through the building’s 21-year-old chief security guard Mohamad Zaini Zainordin.

Testifying as the 10th prosecution witness, Mohamad Zaini read out an entry made on Oct 18 last year that recorded C/Insp Azilah Hadri’s visit to the building.

The logbook entry showed the police officer signing in at 9.54am as “Azilah bin Hadri” with the identity card number “760328-13-6051” before signing out at 11.05am.

However, Mohamad Zaini told the court he did not know who had recorded that particular entry as he was working the night shift from the previous night until 7am that day.

Yemen: We were warned of al-Qaida attack

MARIB, Yemen - Yemeni security officials were warned about a possible al-Qaida attack, but said Tuesday they did not think it would include the suicide bombing that killed a group of Spanish tourists visiting a remote temple.

A regional official blamed the terrorist group for Monday's attack, which killed seven Spaniards and two Yemenis at the temple linked to the ancient Queen of Sheba. Governor Arief al-Zoka said the "security apparatus are chasing the plotters" and that "al-Qaida is behind it."

One of six injured survivors told a Spanish radio station Tuesday the scene was a "nightmare."

"I climbed out of the window. I saw that the first car was burning, in the second one, the people looked pretty bad and in mine, everyone was shouting," Maria Begona Larrabeiti told Onda Cero Radio from Althura Hospital in the Yemeni capital of San'a.

"Then I couldn't see what was happening in the fourth as I ducked because they were shooting," she added. "It was an absolute nightmare."

The vehicles carrying the tourists were shredded almost beyond recognition, with human remains scattered along with women's clothing, a bag, shoes, and picnic items.

A security official said al-Qaida had warned recently of attacks against Yemeni oil facilities, government institutions and foreign embassies. Security was heightened at those places, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

"What happened yesterday was unexpected," the official said. "They managed to mislead us."

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh offered a $76,000 reward for information about those behind the attack, which occurred in the central province of Marib, an area known for lawlessness and al-Qaida sympathies. Spain and the United States have warned against travel to the area, where foreigners have been frequently kidnapped.

The U.S. Embassy banned its employees from leaving San'a, and canceled its July 4 celebrations. It urged Americans in Yemen to "keep a low profile."

Spain's Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos said Yemen believed the attack was directed against the country's tourist sector and not against Spain. Spain has sent a medical plane with doctors and police specialists to Yemen to bring back the injured and the bodies of the dead.

"We're all in a lot of pain. That's all we can say at the moment," said a woman who answered the phone at the Barcelona home of one of those killed, Gabriel Tortosa Ortega. It was not immediately possible to obtain her name.

The attack occurred the same day a trial ended in Madrid of 28 people, mostly Moroccan, for the 2004 Madrid train bombings blamed on al-Qaida that killed 191 people and injured some 1,500.

Witnesses said a car drove into the tourists near the 3,000-year-old temple, known by its Arabic name, Balqis. A group of teens said they heard gunshots before the attack. Other witnesses said the car with the bomber was parked and blew up when the tourists approached.

According to the security official, al-Qaida was responsible for the killing of one senior provincial official two months ago. A number of known al-Qaida operatives remain at large in Yemen.

Yemen is the ancestral home of Osama bin Laden, and the Marib region is home to four powerful tribes with more than 70 branches and is known to be a hotbed of support for al-Qaida.

About 100 foreigners have been kidnapped in the area since the 1990s. Tourists are a rare sight, though more have been visiting lately.

British Muslim group condemns car bombings

LONDON (AFP) - Britain's main umbrella group of Muslim organisations on Tuesday strongly condemned the three failed car bomb attacks here, calling for cross-community efforts to tackle the extremist threat.

"Those who seek to deliberately kill or maim innocent people are the enemies of us all," said Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari, secretary-general of the moderate Muslim Council of Britain.

Speaking at a news conference at the MCB's east London headquarters, Bari said there was "no cause whatsoever" to justify the attempted bomb attacks in central London early Friday and at Glasgow airport on Saturday afternoon.

"Those who engage in such murderous actions and those that provide support for them are the enemies of us all, Muslims and non-Muslims, and they stand against our shared values in the United Kingdom," he added.

Bari's comments come amid continued concern among some sections of Britain's 1.6-million-strong Muslim community about radicalisation as well as government and police efforts to tackle it.

There have been complaints since the September 11, 2001, attacks in the United States that the Muslim community has been unfairly targeted after a series of high-profile raids.

Those concerns were exacerbated following the July 7, 2005, attacks on London, in which four British Islamist extremists blew themselves up on the capital's public transport network, killing 52 others and injuring over 700.

But like many commentators, Bari praised new Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Home Secretary Jacqui Smith for their "calm and reassuring" response and also singled out Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond for his calls for calm.

"It cannot be stressed enough that terrorists actively seek to divide us and to undermine our collective strength," he went on.

"To be successful in our collective effort to deal with the threats of terror it is imperative that we all work together.

"We need to have confidence and mutual trust in each other. The challenges facing us as a nation require us to work together for the joint benefit of all."

Bari and his deputy Daud Abdullah expressed their shock that up to six of the eight people in custody were medical doctors.

"As we have stated in the past, terrorism is not a regional nor a national matter. Neither does it have a profession or class," Abdullah told AFP as the MCB called on all Britons to help the police and the security services.
